What is the Health & Wellness SHSM Program?
The Health & Wellness Specialist High School Major (SHSM) is an experiential program designed to provide students with critical knowledge and technical skills in the Health and Wellness sector.
This program offers a focused, hands-on learning experience that prepares students for post-secondary education or careers in fields such as:
Healthcare
Fitness
Nutrition
Mental health
Community wellness
Through a combination of classroom instruction, workplace experience through co-operative education, Dual-credit with Mohawk College, and industry certifications, students gain practical skills and explore various health-related professions. The Health & Wellness SHSM helps students develop critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills while promoting lifelong well-being. It’s an excellent pathway for students who are passionate about making a difference in the Health and Wellness industry.
Students earn four (4) credits in one semester:
PSK4U- Grade 12 Introduction to Kinesiology
PLF4MD- Grade 12 Fitness and Leadership
DCO3O- 2 Credit Co-operative Education (Industry experience)
Students have the opportunity to be certified in:
Yoga Foundations - 20 hours
Meditation and Mindfulness
Introduction to Anatomy - 20 hours
CPR and First Aid Training
Coherence Advantage Heart Math - Six (6) hours
